The goal of this new delivery system is to get packages into customers' hands in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles.
Putting Prime Air into commercial use will take some number of years as we advance the technology and wait for the necessary FAA rules and regulations.

Tablet goes on sale for £30 in UK

Tablet goes on sale for £30 in UK

The UbiSlate 7Ci
A tablet costing £30 has gone on sale in the UK.
The UbiSlate 7Ci, made by UK-based company Datawind, is the commercial version of the Aakash 2 tablet, which was originally launched in India.
There, the tablet is mainly used by students and was designed to provide cheap internet access to help improve education.
Analysts say UK customers buying this tablet and comparing it with others on the market may be disappointed.
The 7in (18cm) Android tablet has wi-fi connectivity, 512MB of RAM, a microUSB connection and 4GB of storage.
It has a three hour battery life and allows users to watch online tutorials and videos, browse the internet and play games.
When the Aakash was launched in India in 2011 it was dubbed the “world’s cheapest touch-screen tablet” and was aimed at schools and colleges. The first version was not well received by critics, but an upgraded version, the Aakash 2, fared better.
Speaking at the Wired 2013 conference in October, Suneet Singh Tuli, who founded Datawind, said getting online was all about affordability.
“It’s not just about creating low-cost devices, for us it’s about delivering the internet,” he said.
Cost offset
Suneet Singh Tuli, who runs Datawind, said his mission was to deliver low-cost internet
A partnership with the Indian government helped the Aakash 2 became one of the country’s best-selling tablets.
“At the start of this year we became the largest supplier of tablet computers in India, ahead of both Apple and Samsung,” said Mr Tuli.
Samsung has since taken the lead.
The company said it could afford to sell the product at such a low price as the cost of the hardware was offset with revenue from content and advertising.
“The reality is that with any consumer electronics device you get what you pay for,” said Ben Wood, an analyst at research company CCS Insight.
“Any consumer buying this tablet with the expectation it will deliver a comparable experience to more expensive, yet affordable, Android tablets such as Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Tesco’s Hudl will be sorely disappointed.”
The company, which was named as the UK’s most innovative mobile company in a government competition in 2012, also has two other tablets with higher specifications advertised on its UK website.
Both Tesco and Aldi have recently joined the “low-cost” tablet market. Tesco’s 7in Hudl device went on sale for £120 and Aldi sold out of the 7in £80 Medion Lifetab shortly after launching it. Argos also launched a £100 tablet known as the MyTablet.

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2013-- (NASDAQ: AMZN)—Just in time for the holiday season, Amazon today announced that customers can purchase Amazon Coins and gift them for apps, games and in-app items in the Amazon Appstore and on Kindle Fire. To celebrate the launch, customers receive up to 20% off when buying or gifting Coins through January 5. Giving the gift of Coins is a great way to introduce new customers to over 100,000 apps and games available in the Amazon Appstore, such as Angry Birds Star Wars II, Wheel of Fortune and Plants vs. Zombies. And, existing customers will love having extra Coins to use on in-app items such as new levels in Candy Crush Saga, recipes in iCookbook, or song collections in SongPop. Customers can gift Coins by visiting www.amazon.com/givecoins.
Amazon Coins became available for customers to purchase apps, games and in-app items in May and since that time hundreds of millions of Coins have been purchased. Here are a few fun facts about Coins:

  • The single most purchased in-app item using Coins is Get more lives! in Candy Crush
  • The first app purchased with Coins was a tie between Jewel Legends: Tree of Life and Cut the Rope: Time Travel HD
  • The woman pictured on the Coin was designed by Amazon and inspired by the Amazonian women of Greek mythology
“Customers love using Amazon Coins in the Amazon Appstore and on Kindle Fire to purchase apps and games,” said Mike George, Vice President of Apps and Games at Amazon. “We know that during the holidays finding that perfect gift can be hard. So, we’re making it easy for you to give the game-playing kids or app-savvy friends and family in your life just what they want – great apps and games to use on their phones and tablets. And remember, if you are a Kindle Fire owner, we automatically deposited 500 Coins in your account. So, if you haven’t used them yet, happy shopping.”
Here’s what customers have to say about Amazon Coins:
“Amazon Coins are such a simple, easy idea I’m excited for the future of it. Plus with the money you save it’s a no brainer.” – Dan, Amazon Coins customer
“I bought these Coins so I don’t have a lot of little charges on my credit card. I balance every single purchase I make, so writing down a silly 99 cent purchase my kids make can be annoying. I buy $10 worth of Coins every few months and I save 50 cents and I also don’t have to write down little purchases, so this is a win, win for me.” – J, Amazon Coins customer
“My daughter and I both have the Kindle Fire HD and the coins are a great way for us to stay on a budget. At the beginning of the month we each buy our Coins for the month.” – Devon, Amazon Coins customer
“Very good deal on Coins, I got at least 1 game paid for by Amazon and my money’s worth! Love Amazon and my Kindle.” – Nikki, Amazon Coins customer
Amazon Appstore developers will earn their standard 70% revenue share when customers make purchases using Amazon Coins. No Coins-specific changes are required for developers with apps and games currently in the Amazon Appstore. Customers can earn Coins when they purchase select apps and games and throughout the holiday season. The Amazon Appstore will have hundreds of titles that are either free or available between 50% - 90% off. The deals include popular titles like Super Why!, Where’s My Mickey, Monopoly, Angry Birds Star Wars II, NBA2K14, Wheel of Fortune and OfficeSuite Pro, among others.

Facebook to join S&P 500 index

Facebook to join S&P 500 index

Nasdaq exterior with Mark Zuckerberg
A little over a year after its stock market debut, Facebook has joined the S&P 500 index of some of the world’s largest firms, replacing test equipment maker Teradyne.
Companies in the S&P 500 can be listed on either the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange.
The S&P 500 is considered the best representation of the US stock market and a bellwether for the US economy.
Facebook shares jumped 4% after hours on the news.
After a botched public offering in May 2012, Facebook shares slid to less than half of their initial $38 (£23; 28 euro) price, before recovering during the summer of 2013.
The company has been pleasing investors recently, notching better than expected earnings and strong mobile advertising sales, a crucial metric watched by analysts.
It is now worth a little over $122bn (£74bn).
Other firms added to the S&P 500 are Alliance Data Systems and flooring company Mohawk Industries.
They replace retailer Abercrombie & Fitch and JDS Uniphase, a maker of optical technology.

Google opens first data centres in Asia

Google opens first data centres in Asia

Google Data Centre in Taiwan
Google has opened its first ever data centres in Asia as it looks to boost its growth further in the region.
The move comes as a growing number of people in Asia – which is home to more than half of the world’s population – are getting connected to the internet.
Google said that having data centres in Asia will help it to provide faster and “more reliable” access to its tools and services to users in the region.
The two new centres are based in Taiwan and Singapore.
“The growth in Asia’s Internet has been amazing,” Joe Kava, vice president of data centres at Google, said in a blogpost.
“Between July and September of this year alone, more than 60 million people in Asia landed on the mobile internet for the first time. That’s almost two Canadas, or three Australias.
“And this growth probably won’t slow for some time, since the majority of people that have yet to come online also happen to live in Asia,” he added.
The rapid speed at which internet users in the region have been growing, has turned Asia into a key market for internet firms.
China – Asia’s largest economy – has more 500 million internet users, making its the world’s biggest internet market.
Meanwhile, India – the world’s second most populous country after China – has seen the number of users double to 200 million just in the last two years.
It took six years to achieve a similar growth in the US, according to Google.
The firm said it plans to invest $600m (£365m) in the long run in the Taiwan data centre – the bigger of the two facilities in the region.

Google lets users create own Street View

Google lets users create own Street View

Google Map showing Street View
Google has unveiled a new tool that allows users to create a Street View – a 360 degree virtual tour – of any place and share it using Google Maps.
These can be created by using photos taken by an Android phone or DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) camera.
The tool lets users connect various photos and, once published, people can navigate between them on Google Maps.
Google said the move will allow it to expand the reach as well as the uses of its maps service.
“We are excited to see the different types of Street View experiences that everyone will contribute,” the firm said in a blog post.
“For example, this feature can now enable environmental non-profits to document and promote the beautiful places they strive to protect.
“It also opens up a new tool for photographers to showcase diversity in a specific location – by times of day, weather conditions or cultural events – in a way that Street View currently doesn’t cover,” it added.
Growing importanceDigital maps have become a key growth area in recent times, not least because of the surge in popularity of gadgets such as smartphones and tablet PCs.
Google, a big player in the sector, has been aiming to expand its presence further, analysts say.
In June this year, it bought an Israeli social mapping company, Waze.
As it announced the deal, Google had said it planned to enhance Google Maps with Waze’s traffic updates feature.
Rival Apple also launched its own map app in 2012. Earlier this year, Apple bought indoor-mapping specialist Wifislam to expand its maps product in an apparent effort to compete with Google.
Other geo-location apps, such as FourSquare, Tinder and Here On Biz, are also incorporating mapping services of some kind.
Meanwhile, Google has been trying to look at different ways of gathering images for creating its street views.
The firm has usually sent out cars and trikes, a three-wheeled vehicle, to gather the images, which made it difficult to capture locations that were less accessible.
Earlier this year, it created a modified backpack called Trekker, to enable people to walk to remote locations and get the 360 degree images required.
The Trekker has already been used in the Grand Canyon and from the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa.

US ‘Cyber Monday’ spending up 16% driven by mobiles

Workers with packages on an assembly line
US shoppers spent a record $2.29bn (£1.4bn) on ‘cyber Monday’ with significantly more purchases coming from mobile devices.
According to the Adobe Digital Index survey, mobile sales rose 80% from last year, and overall sales were up 16%.
Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, said more than 1 billion people visited its website on Monday.
The stronger-than-expected figures came after a disappointing Black Friday sales weekend.
Mega Monday’Cyber Monday’ was a termed coined in 2005 by the internet retail association Shop.org to mark the first Monday back at work after the Thanksgiving holiday, where US consumers were encouraged to continue their holiday shopping online.
Since then, online sales have soared.
In 2011, the day became the biggest online shopping day of the year in the US, a position it has held on to since.

China awards first 4G licences to three operators

China awards first 4G licences to three operators

A picture of a person using a mobile phone
China has awarded its first licences to mobile phone companies to provide the superfast 4G network to customers.
The licences, which are designed to give mobile phone users faster access to services, were granted by the government to China Mobile, China Unicom Hong Kong and China Telecom.
The move is expected to boost business for a range of companies, from telecom equipment makers to Apple.
China Mobile is expected to offer 4G to subscribers from 18 December.
It will be followed by China Unicom and China Telecom, the country’s other two major carriers.
Apple iPhoneThe new licences are for the TD-LTE (Long Term Evolution) networks. This is different to the FDD-LTE standard used to provide 4G data connections in many other parts of the world.
That means most smartphone owners will not be able to switch between 4G networks when travelling in and out of the country.
It does, however, pave the way for the country’s biggest operator to support the iPhone.
China Mobile’s 3G network was based on a different technology to its rivals and was not compatible with Apple’s handsets. However, its 4G network will work with the iPhone 5S and 5C, providing the US firm with the potential for further growth.
The country’s bestselling three smartphone makers are Samsung, Lenovo and Coolpad, according to a recent report by the consultants IDC.
It said Apple came in sixth place after its market share slipped to just 5% in the April-to-June quarter. But it suggested that figure would “remarkably improve” once the firm could target China Mobile’s hundreds of millions of customers.
The government also issued China Mobile a licence to operate fixed-line broadband services, adding the company to existing providers China Unicom and China Telecom.
China is the world’s biggest smartphone-using country, with 1.2 billion mobile phone users.

Samsung pulls Galaxy S3 update

Samsung pulls Galaxy S3 update after complaints

Galaxy S3
Samsung has suspended a software update that upgraded UK-based Galaxy S3 owners to version 4.3 of the Android operating system – also known as Jelly Bean.
The download first became available about a fortnight ago, but subsequently some users began complaining of numerous problems.
These included faster than normal battery drain, some apps refusing to work and alarms failing to trigger.
The firm said it was now investigating the matter.
“We are committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience, and will ensure to resume the upgrading service at the earliest possibility,” it added in a statement.
Several users posted messages on Samsung’s UK Facebook page to complain that the firm had taken this long to act.
“Samsung keep telling us that they will let us know as soon as they find a fix, but in the meantime I am left with a phone that is next to useless,” wrote one owner, Dylan Barlow, to the BBC.
The Galaxy S3 was first released in May 2012 running Android 4.0. Although it was later updated to 4.1, users were never offered the 4.2 upgrade – making the latest release the first for the handset since the start of the year.
The SamMobile news blog noted that one of the reasons for the firm to have released the upgrade at this point would have been to allow the phone to be compatible with its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
Another site, Android Police, has also revealed that the US network AT&T has pulled the 4.3 update for subscribers who own the newer S4 handsets, but has not yet released a statement.
This is not the first time such upgrades have caused issues,
In February, Vodafone UK and 3 Austria recommended iPhone 4S owners delayed an upgrade to Apple’s iOS 6.1 operating system after complaints that some handsets were having problems making calls and connecting to the internet.
Days later the US firm released a new version of the software that fixed the problems.

Jolla: Ex-Nokia employees launch smartphone

A team of ex-Nokia employees has released the first handset running on a new smartphone platform.
The Jolla phone – pronounced Yol-la – is powered by open-source operating system Sailfish, but can run most apps designed for Google’s Android platform.
The company has paired with a major Finnish network, and hopes to set up a similar deal with a UK operator.
Industry analysts said Jolla faced a challenge in taking on a market dominated by Google and Apple.
Just 450 Jolla phones will be available at launch on Wednesday evening, with the majority going to customers who have pre-ordered the device.
Co-founder Marc Dillon told the BBC the company was in the process of ramping up manufacturing.
He said the phone’s ethos was to provide a more “open” approach to how people used their mobiles, a contrast to the relatively closed systems used on the iPhone and, to a lesser extent, Android devices.
“There’s different opportunities for people to get apps form different places, different stores,” he said.
“We’ve created a world-class platform. Users will be getting more choice.”
